Are toes sopposed to turn blue with a broke ankle when it is unelevated?
On Thursday my 12 year old fell and hurt her ankle. ER crays were taken and declared to be a sprain ace bandage applied and crutches in hand we left. On Saturday her leg from right above her ankle to the end of her toes was a dark bluish purple color (While Standing) went to different ER by the time we got there blue color was back to normal (elevated in car) once again told just a sprain. On Wednesday (6days later) took her to orthopedic Dr. he says it is broken looking at the 6 day old xrays and casts it. 5 hours later back to er because every time she stands up her toes go deep dark purple they cut the cast off. Back to Or-tho on Thursday morning doc in surgery nurses say color change like this is normal and recast her foot. Call Dr. on Friday and he is gone for the weekend. Her toes are still turning a very deep purple in just minutes of standing. Can anyone out there help me I hate to say that the nurses are wrong but am very concerned they could be. If you have medical experience or have had a broken ankle can any one tell me if this is normal or should I be concerned??? This is a very severe discoloration in minutes not just a mild one.
The cast cuts of the circulation to her foot/toes. Just like if you were to wrap your fingure very tight with something, and you could watch it turn purple and blue because of not getting enough circulation to it. But, it is normal for this to happy, but make sure she keeps it elevated. When I had my ankle broken it did the same thing, maybe not as severe, but pretty bad, and when I went to the doctor they said it was normal. Do not worry about it. It is perfectly normal, unless it causes severe pain, there is nothing that can be done. I hope her ankle gets better.
No, I recently broke my ankle and they have not turned blue elevated or unelevated.
