I was just perscribed an antibiotic, but I'm in college and I like to drink alcohol. Risks in mixing?
I was perscribed Bactrim, an antibiotic usually used for ear infections and such, to treat my acne. When I go back to college though, I have every intention of drinking alcohol on the weekends (I don't drink ridiculously dangerous amounts, but enough to have fun.) I'm worried about the possible effects of drinking while on this medication. Will it just decrease the antibiotic's ability to work, or make me more succeptible to intoxication? Or is it an actually dangerous combination?

Well, it won't kill you, but it may decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic. I am a registered nurse; so I have a little bit of knowledge on the subject. To put it in layman's terms, it basically makes you pee out the antibiotic before it can become effective. There are others that are more dangerous with alcohol, but Bactrim is generally OK. However, this is taking into account that you really are truthful and don't take your consumption to the extreme.

The best thing to do is to ask your pharmacist: you can call a couple and no one has to know your name. I've done it before, but found out I had to call more than 2 to get an accurate answer. Your doctor could help to, but it may be too late to ask him. There is a couple of antibiotics, where you definetly can't drink, others are not so dangerous.
