How would the circulation within a mammalian fetal heart differ fromt hat in an adult?
The fetal heart differs from the adult heart in a few anatomical ways. In the fetal heart there is an opening between the right and the left atrium called the foramen ovale. Through this opening, blood travels directly from the right to the left side of the heart without going through the lungs. The fetal lungs ae not mature and do not oxygenate blood during pregnancy so the mom does this for the baby. What blood does not go from the right to left atrium directly goes into the right ventricle and is pumped into the pulmonary arteries. In the fetus there is there is a connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta called the ductus arteriosus. This also helps the blood bypass the lungs as they are not functional at this point. When the fetus is born the pressures in the heart change and cause these openings to close. In the adult the foramen ovale becomes the fossa ovalis. The ductus arteriosus becomes the ligamentum arteriosum. In about 30 % of adults the foramen ovale does not close completely.
