My 9 year old boy has been in the hospital with pneumonia for 10 days. He has received IV antibiotics, and has just started using Vancomycin (which is a "last resort" antibiotic) despite the risks for use in children. After 4 days taking Vancomycin his chest xrays have yet to show any improvement, however his fever has consistently been lower in the last 3 days. I would like to know if it is typical for a child to be hospitalized this long with pneumonia and if I should request other tests to check for any other illnesses that may be affecting him. The doctor specifically stated that he had never had a patient take so long to recover from pneumonia. I fear there may be something else wrong. |

Since his fever is showing improvement, the antibiotics are helping him improve, albeit slowly. Make sure he is taking deep breaths throughout the day, where he is inhaling deeply and slowly as much as he can take in, then holding it for a couple of seconds, and then exhaling slowly until he can't exhale the breath any more. He may choke doing this, but it will help his lungs get stronger and help the pneumonia break up in his lungs. I would do the deep breathing at least three breaths every waking hour. Make sure he is drinking enough fluids. The bacterial profile the hospital ran should have pointed out if there were any other bacterial sources, which it evidently didn't. There is also a possibility that when they give him IVs, that they give him too much fluid.They should be monitoring how much he urinates versus how much IV and drinking he is doing. The xrays should pick up any excess fluids if so. But if it seems he is wheezing more after an IV, make sure the nurse is aware of it, and also check with the doctor if so. God Bless! |
