Oh my, this is a loaded question. First of all Yahoo has an excellent page about Prednisone:
http://health.yahoo.com/hormone-medications/prednisone/healthwise--d00350a1.html
Secondly, if you are diabetic, WATCH YOUR SUGAR LEVELS CAREFULLY and get help from your doctor if you need it.
For me it caused severe depression, hyperactivity, cataracts at age 35 being type II diabetic, my blood sugar levels were almost impossible to control. The bone loss in my cervical spine was so bad that I had to have disk fusion surgery and a metal plate 2 times.
Fortunately, thanks to a new medicine for allergic asthma called Xolair, I RARELY need to take Prednisone very often anymore. http://www.xolair.com It is not indicated for COPD but it sure has helped asthmatics. I highly suggest you ask your doctor about it.
There is an asthma yahoo health group that jokingly refers to Prednisone as... "Evil Candy."
Yes, Pred is necessary but it the side effects can be evil.
If you have no choice but to be on it for long periods of time, I suggest this book:
"Coping with Prednisone, Revised and Updated: (*and Other Cortisone-Related Medicines) (Paperback)
by Eugenia Zukerman (Author), Julie R. Ingelfinger (Author)"
You can find it at most bookstores or you probably can order it from amazon.com
Good luck friend. I have been there, and done that and it is NO fun! |

some people with lupus take prednisone for years. My doc had me take a calcium supplement and fosamax to prevent bone loss. Blood tests will help the doc watch for diabetes. There are a lot of side effects- so if your doctor can manage you on an inhaled steroid or another type of drug you'd be better off.
Ask your doc for alternatives. SOmetimes they prescribe it because it is cheaper than other drugs. |

Quite a few:
1. Osteoporosis
2. Aseptic necrosis of femoral heads (bone death)
3. Lessened immune response.
4. Reactivation of old healed Tuberculosis
5. Atrophy of adrenal glands
6. Testicular atrophy
etc.................
But at such low dose maybe nothing; unless you take it for long time. |
