I know it sounds silly, but I make a fist with my hands at night when I sleep. I don't even realize I'm doing it, but I wake up with sore hands. I used to do this with my jaw-not so much grinding, but just biting down hard. I no longer seem to do that, now it's my hands. What can I do to try and prevent the fists? Am I doing long term damage?
I am only 25 yrs old, so I doubt I have RA. |

You're probably anxious and it's coming out while you sleep.
Do u also have TMJ?
I know that before i go to sleep, i need to relax as to prevent this from happening. |

Do you have rheumatoid arthritis? Splints may very well be a good idea for you - not only do they keep your joints in positions that keep them from curling in on themselves, they also offer support and protection should you e.g., lie on top of them. When you wake, you can put your hands in warm water and do gentle range of motion exercises until they "warm up". If you don't have RA and this continues see a dr this could be symptoms of RA. |

you could potentially be doing permenant damage; although it is hard to say. if this continues, your could develop early arthritis, which can be very painful, especially if you work a lot with your hands. if you are waking up with aching fists, you might try to hold something in your hand at night, maybe something soft and squishy. try maybe a stress ball, that way it can still be squished, but its still got enough resistance that hopefully it will help. good luck! |
