it depends on what they like, and their gender, but here's some ideas:
book w/bookmark
colorful nail polish
big cookies
chocolate
stuffed animal
suncatcher - paint it yourself and that'll be even better! include a suction cup to attach to a window
bottle of favorite soda/drink
friendship braclet with lots of charms
a poem you wrote about everything you like about your friend
perfume in a pretty bottle
colorful "squashy" pillow in a fun shape
a photo album with recent pictures of all their friends and a message from each of them - it can be a memory, prayer, poem, song, just saying "hi" you know, whatever they want
if they have a hobby - like painting, writing, building models, then supplies for that hobby - like a new brush, a fancy pen and note pad or a new model
a burned cd or new mp3's of the latest music you think they'll like

A book by the Dalai Lama. The worst in inevitable, so just try to give him/her some comfort and help him/her to be at peace with self and the rest of the people around. I am sorry to hear that. God bless.

So sorry to hear your friend is sick with cancer. I lost my mom to cancer 3 years ago and the one gift my aunt gave was irreplaceable. She gave my mom a diary. My mom had a brain tumor and had problems communicating her thoughts and she wrote in it when she could, but when she could no longer write in the diary my dad would sit with her and they'd write it together. It got to be something the my mom and dad and I got to share every night was reflecting on all the good in that day. It means so much to look back and be able to read that diary and remember every day we had together.

Think of some object that typifies your friendship - something that wouldn't mean anything if it came from anybody else, but because it comes from you, it's funny, or it's touching, or it brings her memories of a happier time. That way, she can have those memories to fall back on when things seem dark.

What ever you think she/he will like. I know from a friend of mine, she said her skin would get really dry from the treatments. Her lips were really bad, so things to sooth her, nice bubble bath stuff, with candles, mellow cd. SOmething he or she can relax to and try to forget her/his worries.

Sounds pretty serious. But I would send things for them to do. You may want to check about what they eat, because sometimes you are not hungery, and sendeing food would not be pratical. Send notes and love and things that make that person smile. Most of all, send yourself because they need a friend right now.

A scrapbook for the both of you to work on. It'll bring back happy memories and help bring you closer to your friend. It'll be something that they will look forward to showing and working on. That can mean a lot.
