I have lost a tooth - it is a double back tooth and was crowned many years ago after having a root filling. - I now have lots of 'pink' stringy bits which appear to be coming out of the hole. I think more of the original tooth is missing as well. Can anybody tell me what this is? Thanks
When the root was filed out those stringy bits were put in by the dentist to fill the gap.
I have heard of people actually super glueing a crown back into place until they can get to a dentist, but you must go or the infection will get into your jawbone and can be very serious.

It's probably the base of your brains - get to the dentist pal
puffy
Just bits of old gum tissue by the sounds of it. Get an appointment asap though to have it replaced as it is now an open road to infection.

if you have the crown put it back on as best you can, it's better than leaving it off, you can't glue it but you can bite down on someting to re-seat it a little bit, get in to the dentist A.S.A.P.

if you still have your crown, you can re-cement it temporarily until you get to the dentist. any drugstore sells a temporary cement, it's on the aisle by the toothpaste. This is only temporary! it will usually hold a crown for 2 or 3 days to give you a chance to get to your dentist. it is not advisable to use this for more than a couple of days, you need to get to your dentist asap.

The pink stringy things are the root filling they are called Gutta Percha the tooth will be OK until you get to a Dentist who may decide to provide you with a post crown if there is not much tooth left

I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you that you ought to see your dentist who is qualified, trained, and licensed to give you medical advice. People on this site are not. Good luck!!

No idea. I pulled a crown off once eating taffy. The best idea is to see a dentist before there are health complications.

when it comes to your teeth that is something u don't wait for go to a dentist as soon as u can
Dr. Albert, DDS (UNITED STATES)
JENNY,
AS DR SAM EXPLAINED, THE SMALL PINK STINGY BITS ARE FROM A MATERIAL CALLED GUTTA PERCHA, WHICH WAS PLACED INTO THE NERVE CANALS AFTER THE ROOT CANAL TREATMENT WAS COMPLETED. YOU DON'T WANT TO EXPOSE THIS AREA FOR LONG TO SALIVA OR TO FOOD/DRINK, AS INFECTION OF THE REMAINER OF THE TOOTH THAT HAD APREVIOUS ROOT CANAL WILL TAKE PLACE.
THE IDEAL THING TO DO IS TO HAVE A NEW CROWN MADE FOR THIS TOOTH, WHICH MAY STILL BE SERVICEABLE FOR MANY YEARS. =O)
Sam
The pink stringy bits are the individual strands of gutta percha used in your root canal filling. The cement that holds these in place will NOT stand up to the saliva for very long and, if you want any chance of keeping your tooth, you need ot see your dentist this week, if possible.
