Surf with me sumtime!
Ok, can sum1 tell me if they know about this a little more than I do- knee ligaments?
2 years ago i was flung off a games pony but b4 i landed on the ground, i had a crash and another horse booted me on the knee in mid air. My knee ligaments are still weird ever since, an have not strengthend like the doctor said they shud! Does any1 know wat might hav happened my ligaments?
When i bend my knee, u can feel a pop in the front of ur knee, and movement, above the patella, hav they loosened or perhaps been torn? Help plz if u hav any idea, wud physio help? Im 16!!!
ok so, a few things first
Ligaments don't really strengthen, they heal if torn, usually in a disarranged fashion.
Unless you are doing strengthening exercises (best prescribed following a full knee assessment by a physiotherapist (not a doctor) then nothing will really strengthen.
If you bend your knee you lengthen your quadriceps muscles (4 muscles that run from your hip down your thigh into your patella and over onto your tibia[shin bone] and therefore you are likely to have movement above your patella.
Popping in joints can be a change in pressure in gases in your joint a few other things are proposed but this is the most likely with what you are describing, in your case it is unlikely that it is,
a) bone on bone b) meniscal (cartilage), as you don't report locking, giving way or pain.
Whilst it is possible you have something serious going on it is unlikely, given your description.
My advice would be to request a Physio appointment so they can assess your knee properly and give you the appropriate exercises/treatment.
Good luck and don't stress too much about it, if in doubt strengthen!!
Oh and P.S, please be careful who you take your advice from, some of these answers are terrible. Well intentioned, but terrible.

Sounds just like my injury - torn cartilidge. That popping you hear is probably bone working against bone, where the cartildge used to be. Bad news is that it never fully heals, but the good news is it's not very debilitating if you work with it.
Spend some time on an exercise bike or a real bike (closed-chain stuff seems to keep it strengthened and flexible). Also, consider taking glucosamine tablets. I find that as long as I do those two things, I can do everything that with my leg I was doing pre-injury, albeit maybe just a bit more conservatively.
Talk to your doc about all this to make sure, but I believe that's what your dealing with. Just adjust your lifestyle a little bit with your knee in mind, and it'll be fine. Good luck.

If you had torn ligaments, you would know it. You wouldn't have been walking on them for two years. The thing about knee injuries is that they're kind of hard to diagnose and take forever to heal. There are all kinds of tendons and ligaments in the area, plus cartiladge that can be damaged and bones that are really easy to knock around. There's no way anyone on here will be able to tell you what's wrong with it, but it's possible that it will never heal normally again. Definitely speak to your doctor again. Ask him to do some x-rays - he may even want to order an MRI to check for damage. Physical therapy may be an option as well, and I'm kind of surprised you haven't already had it after a knee injury. Perhaps you should try a different doctor. Do it soon, because if you don't you could end up with unbearable arthritis when you get older. Good luck!

I had an injury on my knee playing football when I was 18. A dodgy tackle and my foot went one way, my knee went the other. The actual injury was a torn cruciate ligament. It snapped back on itself, taking out three small chips from the meniscus. Lovely!
The pain was intense, I passed right out there and then in the mud, and it swelled up instantly.
I was taken to the GP who said it would heal up fine, given a year or so. It didn't.
The result was two years of agony (including popping and the knee buckling-my knee would give way and I'd be left sitting on the floor!), a year of physiotherapy, 8 months on crutches and then finally an arthroscopy to flush out the chips, and clip away the ragged parts of the cartilage. You gotta love the NHS!
I've been told it'll never be 100% healed, and to this day (I'm now 25) when it rains my knee still aches, still pops, and still swells up.
My advice, with ANY bone injury (or suspected bone injury) you should go straight to your hospital, not your doctor. Reason being, the doctor is NOT an Orthopaedist (Or bone specialist) and cannot tell you what damage has been done without taking an x-ray.
No matter how long ago the injury happened, you can still go to the hospital and get them to look it over. They'll discuss physiotherapy and possible surgery from there on in.
Physiotherapy helped heaps before and after surgery (it hurt like hell though) because they were able to manipulate the knee to pinpoint exactly where the problem was, and the extent of my injury, and also to massage it to give more range of movement.

You need a scan and possibly an arthroscopy to find out just what is going on in your knee. Until you know what is wrong you should avoid exercise including physio.
Be forceful with your doctor - you need to insist on this being sorted now or you could face years of problems.
