no they arn't the same thing... you can get cold sores without haveing herpes... and herpes outbreaks can sometimes look like a cold sore but cold sores are usually around your mouth and herpes can be many different places

Cold sores are actually herpes. They are a different form than the STD kind I believe but are still a herpe. Yes they develop on their own and do go away with lip balm or such.
POJO....as for chicken pox and schingles, if you have had chicken pox, your chances of getting schingles are slim to none. Schingles is a form of chicken pox. So, if you have had either one, your chances of getting the other is pretty rare. I should know, I have had chicken pox, worked in a nursing home for many years and have taken care of people with schingles and have never gotten it.

I'm a nurse. Yes they are the same thing. People refer to a cold sore as they do a herpes sore. They don't develop on their own, it's an std. There is also no cure for it, but many people suffer from this. Patients have an outbreak like every 3 months or more a year. Your doctor can prescribe medication for comfort while it passes, make an appointment.
