I've been couging up brown speckled stuff the past 3 mornings and evenings. I've been a smoker (1/2 pack a day) for 2 years. recently I have gradually come down to 3 cigs/day. Im coughing up this mucus plugs that look like this:

That is the tar from the cigarettes. Your lungs are trying to clear this out of your system. |

I'm pretty sure that the brown stuff is just mucus mixed with tar from your lungs because you are cutting back on cigs. I would go see a doctor to be sure though. |

it could be just thickened mucus or something bad like emphysema the safest thing you can do is go to a doctor and make sure. |

Good grief! Do you REALLY want to continue to smoke when you are coughing up junk? This should be a bright red sign to you to stop now. If this continues you need to see a MD to have a sputum test done, at least. Probably a broncoscopy too to see the real condition of your lung tissue. You know the real danger of smoking so we don't have to hit you over the head before you get seen do we? GO! |

im a smoker and im assuming maybe go to a doctor cause im not one but i sometimes do cough up stuff but only when my sinuses and allergys start up its probably sinus drainage. i know there is a lot of pollen this ;year and ive had real bad sinus problems. thats what im guessing im no doctor though so i dont know what the odds of it being because of smoking ive never coughed up any of that because of my smoking |

Much as I hate to admit it, I've been smoking for many years, born and raised around it. I have NEVER coughed up anything out of my lungs unless I had a bad cold. It's never been discolored when I have coughed up. If I blow my nose and it's discolored, I have a sinus infection. I'm not looking at your pics cause I don't want to heave and gag. I'll just take your word for it. Some people are more sensitive to smoke and other enviromental elements and are more affected by them. |

I agree with the tar answers. You must be congested a bit, and the mucus ends up being the color of the tar. And your lungs are trying to get rid of it by coughing it up.
Interesting experiment.. it uses 400 cigs, the equivalent of 20 packs (2 cartons, and at 1/2 pack a day, a lil under a month and a half.
