I had it. Things did NOT go smoothly for me. I had complications and was surprised to find that those of us who have had such problems do not count in Essure's amazingly high success statistics. The only people that count in the stats are those who are tested and told that they are sterile and then later become pregnant. Some of those people may be excluded on the basis that the testing doctor actually erred and that they were never sterile.
I went into that procedure thinkng that I had a 98.8% chance of being sterile 3 months later and that's not the case. My doctor couldn't even tell me anything about what percentage of people had this expensive procedure once or even twice (as I did) and still needed to use other birth control. Also, the 0.2% failure rate is just for the first year AND there is no data as to how many women conceive 5 years after the procedure. So if you're young who knows what failure rate you can expect 10-20 years down the road.
If I had it to do over again I'd look at Implanon. They make Essure so simple but my experience was 9 months of doctors visits, crazy bleeding, pain, condoms and pregnancy tests.
