What would you say to someone that you've never met before, that has recently found out they have cancer?
If you have never met them, why would you have to say anything?
Simmi
If they are talking to you about it, say "I'm so sorry. What type of cancer, what sort of treatment are you going to get, what do you think about all this?" If they have told you, then they need to talk most likely.

Hi, pleased to meet you..........
I would be unlikely to discus a persons health with someone I have never met unless they raised the subject first.
Do not talk about how bad cancer is, and try to keep things positive if the subject does turn to cancer.
There are many great treatments out there, and many success stories, especially where treatment is started early.

cancer is something that makes you feel so many things just know that no matter how alone you feel there is someone here who cares and understands i think that sounds about right
Billy
Treat them normal, they have enough stress without having to impress a newcomer. Don't ask about the cancer, just talk about everyday stuff, tv shows, weather, sports etc.

Do not bring the subject up, if they want to talk about it they will.

Give them a polite invitation to talk about it, and, if they don't want to, just drop the subject. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer it seemed that everyone was so afraid to bring up the subject for fear of hurting my feelings, and all I wanted to do was talk. Be gentle about it, but don't act as if nothing's wrong.
