You are completely correct. You should brush your teeth for 2-3 minutes, unless you have braces, then for about 5 minutes.
I would suggest telling your boyfriend this too. I don't know what his dentist was thinking, because you can damage your gums from brushing to long. |

Until they are clean. Until you have brushed the stuff off of them which has accumulated since the last brushing and can be brushed off.
It isn't so much a matter of how long you brush as it is how thoroughly you brush. Use washing dishes as an analogy. If a person slops around and doesn't bother to scrub well, then it is going to take them longer to clean the same sink full of dishes that it would take someone who scrubs thorough does. |

If you really want to know when your teeth are clean, get some of that stain dentists give little kids to train them to brush properly. It won't hurt, and after all the stain is gone, you will know how long it will take to get your teeth clean.
I cheat, I soak mine over night. |

My electric toothbrush has a timer that shuts off after two minutes.
The dentist in question is obsessive compulsive. |

it is around 2-3 min but maybe the dentist wanted him 2 brush more bcuz of plaque or sumtin i wouldnt do it for 10 min if it really irritates ur gums but if u want 2 do it for that long i would gradually add a min a day nd see if that helps:) |

It takes 2min for the toothpaste to work, so that's the minimum time you need to brush your teeth. Ten minutes of solid brushing can wear away at your gums and stuff.
Maybe your boyfriend brushes his teeth really badly, and needs to spend way more time on it, so that's why the dentist said that! :D
Or maybe his dentist meant he should spend approx ten minutes *total* on his teeth, including flossing. |

your right.
2-3 minutes, floss and mouthwash
doing that morning and night will keep your teeth good. |
