I'm in so much pain, but I don't know what to do!?
I have a broken molar in my mouth, and it's giving me some really massive toothaches. It used to just come and go, but now it's been going on for 2 days. I've tried putting Orajel on the gums surrounding the tooth, and that worked for a little while, but now it has no effect. I would normally go in for an emergency visit to the dentist, but I'm not at home, where my insurance covers me. Anyone have some advice on how to dull the pain down for 24 hours? Then I get to go see a local dentist :) Additional Details I have a broken molar in my mouth, and it's giving me some really massive toothaches. [EDIT] Would putting the benzocaine directly into the exposed nerve have any effect? I took some ibuprofen, but no effect. Ice is almost done getting frozen, too.
Grow some balls, and deal with it until you get home.

Take a non-aspirin pain-killer like Aleve or Advil. Take the highest recommended dose every 4 to 6 hours. This is a higher dose than normal, but I had one of my friends who is an emergency room nurse recommend this to me when I was away from home with a pinched nerve in my hip. It is fine if you do this for a 24 hour period, until you can get to a dentist. You sound as if the break has exposed the nerve of the tooth. Do not mix any other pain medicine or alcohol with this, as you will end up in big trouble. Best of luck, hope this helps. High doses of aspirin are not suggested, as this is very hard on the stomach. Have a good night, or at least a bit more pain free.

Take 2 Tylenol and 3 Advil all at once. It may upset your stomach but it will kill the pain. (Don't take this if you are allergic to either drug)

Hey Tylor, I know how you feel. Take Ibuprofin, You have no idea how well that works!! It's awesom. Your pain will go away within 10-15 minutes. If It is pulsing, then you have an infection. Taks some penicilin for that. But like me, if you done get it taken care of, its only going to get worst. Good luck!

take ibuprofen. It helps with tooth pain more than tylenol. I have dissolved asprin on a cancor sore before, it will dull that pain. Your brain can only receive pain from one source at a time, so I have bitten my finger to take my mind off of other pain, but that only works for a short time.

Ask a pharmacist for clove oil. It tastes like cloves, but it's worth it if you're in that much pain. Next, alternate acetominophen and ibuprofen every two hours. Or better, if you can get somthing down, take acetominophen every 4 hours and naproxen sodium every six. But eat before you take the naproxen. It's very effective against dental pain, though.

The nerve of that tooth is definetely involved, and the only think I could think of is taking Ibuprofen or tylenol, and if you can talk to your dentist by phone , sometimes they can call in some pain medication at the pharmacy for you.

If you've actually cracked a tooth (which you have), no amount of topical anesthetic is going to help (Ambesol, etc.). The benzocaine (the active topical pain reliever) can't get inside the tooth, which is where the pain is.
The best I can offer is regular, OTC painkillers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin. Except for aspirin, you shouldn't suffer any ill effects if you exceed the recommended dosage by about 50% (in other words, take three Tylenol, or Advil, instead of two). Don't do this with regular aspirin, because it can hurt your stomach. But for a day or two (only) the higher dosages of the other things can't hurt you.
Another thought would be (yes, I am serious) to take a shotglass full of some distilled spirit (scotch, vodka, rum, whatever you've got). Make sure the stuff is at least 80 proof (40% alcohol), and make sure it's at room temperature. If it's cold, it's going to hurt.
Just take a mouthful of the booze (about half of the shotglass), and swish it slowly in your mouth, like a mouthwash. The alcohol can get into the tooth itself, and into the nerve, which will help to deaden the pain (afterward, you can spit the stuff out, but it seems sinful to waste it!). Repeat as necessary. Like I said, make sure the liquor is at room temperature, or else it will hurt like hell when you swirl it around the tooth. And of course, don't try this unless you are of Legal Drinking Age.
