What would happen if two bipolar people had children?
What are the odds?
Additional Details
My son is bipolar with manic tendencies. While he was institutionalized, he met a really nice girl. She is 21, my son is 22. They seem very good together. She is a rapid cycling bipolar. They are talking about getting married on 9/9/09. I AM SERIOUS. I am interested in serious answers, PLEASE. Although I dont think some of these answers are mean spirited, I would like some REAL answers.

well if these people with bipolar are obviously diagnosed then they would be on medication to stabilise their condition so would in fact be "ordinary" stable human beings who are just as able to provide a loving caring environment for their child just as any other other person in this world, im sure they would have professional counselling and the child's behaviour would be observed as it grew older, and appropriate tests would be conducted,, see, what really should be bothering you and the smart a.rs,es who answer your question is the amount of adults out there who are not diagnosed with any mental condition, who are outwardly "of the norm" but who are actually mentally unstable, real mental cases who go unnoticed yet bring several kids into the world, who eventually end up paying the price for being part of a dysfunctional family!!

I love my baby girl!

Learn Biology then post something saying "im sorry i asked a stupid question"

The child probably would become bipolar. Make sure they are aware of the triggers drugs, drinking and such and help them get help if they need it.

Don't ask me the odds but i know the chance of it being passed on is quite high, just remember that Bi-polar can be controlled with the right medication and many people go on to lead normal lives.

Go to a genetic counselor if you are serious about having kids.

I heard that bipolar disorder only carries on the female side. So it wouldnt make any difference if the dad is bipolar.

Movin' Out
They would have a much higher potential of developing bipolar because bipolar disorder is partly genetic.

Evan B
I would be born.

Poor kids, lol

Things like that are hereditary. Who knows??? Don't act crazy to them, and treat them right. Hopefully they'll be fine.

Courtney Johnson
confused kids

The Joker's Apprentice
I am sure it already happened. Be careful not to piss off those people. This is a racist question to them.

The odds would be there for the child to be bipolar as well. But just because the parents are bipolar doesn't necessarily mean that the child will be to.

peterbilt197
In all likely hood, any children they may have doubles the odds that their children will be bi-polar.

deejayspop
The kid would be a magnet

Heff
They wouldn't be bipolar, they'd be quadpolar.

It is hereditary,

MaGgi
it would be a big bipolar mess

♫Rock On♪ && ♥Peace Out☼
The children would most-likely be quadpolar.

Dale
I am the product of such - and I am bipolar and now have to take medication for it.
Life for the child will be very hard but they can over come it when they reach adulthood.

Bipolar Disorder is frequently inherited, with genetic factors accounting for approximately 80% of the cause of the condition. If one parent has Bipolar Disorder, there is a 10 per cent chance that his or her child will develop the illness. If both parents have Bipolar Disorder the likelihood of their child developing the illness rises to 40 per cent.

Kyle
quad-polar

nemeczek
they would be parents

i asked my phycology teacher the same thing in class last week about autism

he says that the baby will not have autism . and the chances are in the very high

90 percentile . he say "all extremes progress toward the mean"

which means that the genes progress towards normality.

but that only refers to extremes. and bipolar refers to an extreme .

ex. 2 very tall people will not have an even taller child because the genes work toward normality . 2 midgets will not have midget children . if our genes did not work toward normality then we would be in a world where tall people kept getting taller . and small people keep getting smaller

hope that helped =)
