My sister in law is a cutter but I've never said I know how she feels. I pity her but she's a real B so I don't care what she does to herself. |

everybody goes through tough times in their lives. Depending on the person, some people use cutting, others use different actions. For someone who never cuts, to tell a friends that is cutting that she/he understands what that person is going through is normal considering that they understand but from a different point of view. |

I think they mean they know how it feels to feel devastated and lost...i don't think they can really feel the deep unbearable emotion one feels who has been through deep trauma or mental destruction of the soul.So in tense that one would inflict physical injury to ones self to try to relieve the emotional pain they are feeling...to watch you cut puts me beyond your your own misery. I do see your pain, and what pains me more is... I can't help you... till you want to help your self...People may not understand but if you were to talk about it maybe they would...
there is help out there but, you have to ask..... good luck... |

I have friends that cut. I guess I don't entirely know how it feels to cut yourself, but every human can identify with them over the feelings that they cut about. I guess I know how they feel because I know how sadness feels. I guess I just deal with it differently. The friends of mine that cut, did so because they felt extreme sadness, or they were overwhelemed. One of my friends also did it for attention, aswell as sadness. People that don't cut may, or may not, know how those who do cut feel, but what they do know is that there must be alternatives other than destructive habits. |

I TRIED to cut myself, before The Holy Ghost came to me, and said,"THE SACRIFICE HAS ALREADY COME." So, there's no NEED to cut anymore. Anytime. Ever again. |

They're trying to help. It's annoying to feel like you're being patronized, but their intentions are good. |

People are trying to be empathetic because they are frightened and concerned about the behaviour. If you are doing this, please talk to a psychologist! |

...well it's one thing to say they know how they feel...but it's another to say they've felt that way....
you could feel the same way a cutter has, but you choose to deal with it differently. it's very possible.
i, personally wouldnt say that to the people i know who have cut themselves because i know i've never felt that way, but i believe other people have and decided to manage their mental pain in a different way. |

Sometimes it really is just like "how can you even assume you know?" But cutting isn't the only way to deal with things. Everyone goes through times when they feel frustrated and overwhelmed and just can't deal. And EVERYONE has their vices (shopping, drugs, food ... the list goes on) Cutting is just another way to cope.
Granted tho cutting seems to be one of the most understood coping methods. Often people seem to think that we're bad people and that it's sick and wrong. Well those people need to get over themselves. Maybe the question should be "why don't [eople understand cutting?" |

I guess they're just trying to help, and feel that they understand... But yea good point, they obviously don't unless they've done it. |

Everyone has problems, everyone go through hard times so when a person say they understand, but haven't actually experienced it them selves are simply sympathizing what others are going through maybe they have thought about it.
Why are you so upset, some acknowledgment is better than none. So when a person is offering some input you should be grateful no matter what.
Sorry for answering your question cause no I don't know anyone personally who cut themselves. But I am human and have emotions just like those who do cut them selves. So if a friend is in need I will help them to the best of my knowledge regardless if I can empathize or not. |

People don't understand why they cut, but they do understand depression and the feeling of wanting to be in control. |

Perhaps these people can relate because of past experiences that were difficult, sad, and out of control. It's like an expression of caring or sympathy for your pain. All people experience emotional pain.Does someone have to have cancer to feel a cancer inflicted person's pain? Only you know how you feel. These people that say they know how you feel; I think are just trying to help. Their hearts are probably in the right place. I pray that you will connect with someone who can relate and help you. You are in my thoughts. |

Because everybody gets hurt in this world. Nobody's life is perfect. Everybody faces difficulties. Its a matter of point of view. If you think that your life is the most unfortunate, then someone needs to tell you that its not whether it be a person who thinks their life is unfortunate or not. |

What does it matter if we know someone who does that or not? I would never tell someone who cuts that I "understand," because I don't! I know WHY they do it, but I will never understand it. Cutting is something I would never do, even when I'm totally down in the dumps. I just don't see how anything could be so bad that you'd have to cut yourself to feel some sort of relief. |

so i wasnt a cutter but is a head buter and a burner not in the same boat.
i have manny scars from self inflicted wonds such as cigaret and cigar burns facial scars from head butting hard objects
i honestly dont know why a person choses to inflict phisical pain on them selves
i did these things often the more stressed i was the more pain i wanted to feel .cutting isnt the only disasociative behavior
phisical pain is so much easier to deal with than emotional pain
i dont know if this helps but i hope so |

Some of theses people hurt themselves in another way. I do have a nephew that cuts and once right in front of me. My sister likes to hit herself,I just found that out. I deprive myself of food for being stupid and letting numb stuff happen to me. And then there are people that drink themselves into a stupor to escape.Etc. |

My best friend use to cut herself in high school. I think people who don't cut themselves can offer better advice because they can deal with things better. People who cut themselves have a weakness when it comes to stress or dealing with everyday life. They seem to feel sorry for themselves instead of realizing how much worse things could be. Most of the time they just make things worse themselves. I say instead of sitting in a room with a knife or razor do something about the situation. If you can't then try and find another way of coping. |

i personally don't know ppl that cut themselves, or at least don't know if i know ppl that cut themselves. anywayz, i've read an article about this some time ago and i found out it's kindda addictive and ppl that r doing it r doing it to feel relief from tension or something like that. hard to quit 4 them. if u or someone close to u has this, then i suggest u consult a specialist.
take care. |

It's a way of hurting on the outside as much as they are hurting on the inside...no one knows each other degree of pain unless experiencing it for themselves. That goes for everything and that's what people say when they don't know what to say usually. |

Hi,
Some people say this so you will open up to them and so they can reassure you they know how you feel and so you know their understanding and ready to help you. Whereas some people do actually understand. I understand because my best friend went through it, I nearly did it myself several times and because I'm a qualified counsellor.
So speak to someone about this and get help. You dont want scarrs all over your arms and legs. And at the end of the day it doesn't help. It causes physical pain instead of emotional pain. This is why the emotional pain lessens because of the physical and it only lasts a few minutes.
So speak to someone about this and get help. |

I don't know, they might not be talking about the cutting but the feelings that make the other people want to cut, some people just have more self control. I have one friend who starting cutting when she was eleven, i didn't become her friend until i was thirteeen and she was fourteen though. But before i knew she was a cutter, i could tell her i knew how she felt becuase i did.I knew the feeling of being let down, and turned down and getting your hopes up. So some people do know how they feel. |

Because they want the cutter to believe they know how they feel so that they can convince them to stop because THEY don't cut themselves & they "feel the same way" |

I knew someone that cut, and I can't say I knew what she felt... but I wanted her to know I was there for her and that she could always talk to me about her feelings and that I would listen.
Later, I learned that many people cut to remind themselves that they "feel", or to get attention (although I don't believe that one), or because they silently want to kill themselves inside but just can't do it, or that it's a coping mechanism for something they haven't been able to deal with... although I've learned a lot about cutters, and it has helped me gain a little bit of understanding, I have in no way been able to fully encompass what that person goes through on a day to day basis, and not will I pretend to. But, they do need help, whether they want to admit it or not... |

Well most likely because people that cut themselves have some serious mental problems and can't see what's going on and are a danger to themselves and others but don't realize that.
People that cut and are successful with it end up in a morgue and people that see that are just trying to prevent the trip to the morgue. |
