There are some lenses that contain a slight tint all over the lens, acuvue 2 colours (I'm not even sure they make them anymore- we don't sell them!)
Then there's the freshlook colours, they are opaque and have a hole in the centre so you are able to see. The pupils are generally a set size. Freshlook colourblends have 3 colours that mimic a natural iris pigmentation. They get less less dense closer to the centre of the lens to allow your natural colour to show through a little.
If your pupil is bigger than the aperture then you will get glare problems, this will be worse in dim light as your pupils get larger to let more light in.
They never change the colour of your eyes completely, especially if you have a dark iris. They look un-natural

Colored contacts have a set pupil center, because your pupils get larger in the dark some people are able to see the color of the lenses. Not a big fan myself....not the best visually, but look cool.

Contact lenses cover the iris and the pupil--no hole.
