If you have a specific problem, then a specific drop may be needed. If you have dry eye, artificial tears like Refresh may be useful. If you have eye allergies, then allergy eye drops like Zaditor may be needed. If you have glaucoma, then glaucoma drops like Travatan may be needed.
If there is no problem, there is no need for drops.

I agree with the above answers, but wanted to add that you should avoid Visine at all costs. I work for an ophthalmologist and Visine should not be used at all.

I started to develop allergies myself this past summer and tried Zaditor (by Novartis). It's an allergy eye drop that is over the counter and it actually worked quite well.

My optometrist recommended that I use lubricating eye drops like Refresh eye drops or Systane. My eyes are very dry.

JellyBean is right. Zaditor is probably the best over-the-counter solution to allergies. But, artificial tears like Systane help as well. Refresh Liquigel is good too. If those drops don't work for you, there are other options, such as a prescription medication called Patanol, or Pataday. And if THOSE don't work, there are other options that your doctor can offer you as well.
