Detached Retina?
I had this problem starting about a month ago. Sometime during the day, these little dots pop up from my vision and start floating around then disappear. It happens for about 5 seconds. What could be the cause of this?
Also, is it possible to have flashing lights and/or floaters in your vision and not have a detached retina?
Yes it is possible. This can also be a sign of a health condition. This happens to people who have hypertension. If I were you, have your vision checked. Detached retina is serious. If your vision is fine I would see a physician/or heart specialist.

You just need to go and have your eyes checked. We can't tell you what might be causing this. Only the doctor can.

Floaters are relatively common in people over fourty years old. As the vitreous (jelly) ages, it forms little strands and clumps that just float about in the jelly. These are usually just a nuisance, but in some cases they can cause vitreous detachment as the jelly shrinks, pulling itself away from the retina. This can cause breaks in the retina, which can then lead to the more serious retinal detachments.
If it is a retinal detachment, you will have a blind spot or area of blindness in your field of vision relating to the area of retina affected.
All being said before, you should go to an ophthalmologist for a checkup, just in case.
Good luck.

usual signs & symptoms of a detached retina are flashes of lights, blurred or "sooty" vision, or a feeling of a curtain coming up or down w/c is usually painless..
but unless checked and assessed by a doctor, we never know what it is..
so better be sure, go to your doctor ASAP!

It needs checking.
98% of episodes of fresh floaters, with or without flashes, require no treatment, being being purely a vitreous, not a retinal, issue.
But that leaves 2%, where they *are* the early signs of a retinal detachment developing.
Waiting to see, playing the odds, is NOT a good idea.
Admittedly if it started a month ago and it was a retinal detachment, it would have been likely to have developed further by now, but I wouldn't take that as safe reassurance.
