When you cough up phlegm is it ok to swallow it?
I mean it feels as though you are just putting it back where it came from but really it came from lungs right and if swallowed it will go into your stomach... right?
phelgm must be spitted out not swallowed back. these are dirty thing in our body. the more phelgm we spit out the better

I never do and spit it out into a tissue.

It won't hurt you, but it's gross. Then again-hacking a loogey onto the sidewalk is even worse.

There is usually no problem swallowing phlegm, Probably the worst thing that could happen is that you can become nauseated and possibly vomit from that. The phlegm comes from your lungs and nasopharnyx (nose and sinuses) and will go to stomach if swallowed.
FJM
Correct and it will or could make you sick to your stomach. Best to spit it out.

The Respiratory Therapist answer-
Yah, you can swallow it....and yeah, it goes into the stomach...and the stomach has acid in it that measures out to somewhere around a ph of 4.
In case you wanted to know, your stomach lining is replaced every week....unless you have some major stress and have ulcers...but that is a different question...right...?
In the mean time, all that colorful slime that you are swallowing, is broken down into nutritional elements and absorbed into the body...Now the stomach can become overwhelmed by the amount of slime you are swallowing...and , if your stomach gets overwhelm with all that phlegm in the stomach, you may feel the need to up chucking it up... Now if all this talk is grossing you out, remeber this little tidbit....
.... if you don't want to swallow that stuff, it's ok to spit it out in a tissue...
...and not on the side wall...Now that is just plain gross!
Laura
It's best to spit it out if you can. It can make you kind of sick to your stomach if you swallow to much of it. Also you are right, the mucus comes from your lung and if you swallow it, it goes to your stomach. If you are out in public and you hack up a big oooey gooey, it's sux. I try to find a place to go spit but if I can't I have to swallow that nastiness and it kinda gags me.
