i'm writing a book and the main character is 8, and constantly has 'attacks' where she coughs blood nad has a pain in her side.

TB, if someone coughs blood or has a pain in their chest they could have TB (Tuberculosis) Although i'm not sure about how you would get it. Try Wikipedia:

Tuberculosis is the main thing that causes that, but I suppose internal bleeding (probably in the lungs) could cause that too. Which you could definitely blame on child abuse.
If you choose tuberculosis, you'll probably need to include the other symptoms - chest pain, coughing (for a couple of weeks), fever, weight loss, etc.
