Hi, I need some help on something about HIV testing.?
Is it true that when your lymph nodes swell, they begin to produce antibodies for the infection? Let's say I had an exposure about 41 days ago and at about 36 days, I had two swollen lymph nodes. Went or HIV blood test but it was negative but I'm quite worried since the window period is 1 month - 3 months and I got tested negative after 41 days while having swollen lymph nodes. Now I got new swollen lymph nodes growing. My main question is if your lymph node is swelling, does it produce antibodies sopposely HIV cause when I had a hiv antibody blood test, I already had two swollen lymph nodes and it was negative. Please help, I'm very worried and full of regrets. Additional Details
Thanks all for the great comments.
Lymph nodes swell for many reasons, they are meant to contain infection, among other things. HIV is scary so we all need to get accurate information. Call the national aids hot line. It does sound like you have done the right thing by getting tested. Don't worry so much and don't guess at signs. Get educated.

You won't really know for sure until you test after the window period.

first of all i have to tell u that if u have anything that make any risk for having HIV then dont need to be worry u can go to the labratory and ask them for RNA testing of hiv be sure there is no window period for this test and dont need to wait for 3 or 6 months then u can go there and ask them for RNA or P24 od HIV.....about lynph node swelling if any infection or any virus attack u...ur LN will swallow then its better if u ask them for counting the ur WBC(white blood cells) and if u ask my comment ur RBC too.....but dont be worry ,there is no need to have stress ....just got to the lan ask them for these test and then visit a doc....and HIV make the immune system week and if just othere infection attack u maybe u can react low then be sure ur lymph node swelling have other reasons....

lymph nodes can swell by any disseaes. This are like command center, where the antibodies take the virus to destroy it, any kind of virus. So if there is a HIV virus, so they appear on your test, no matter what day is the test. But, dont worry, there are 3 more weeks to you to know what about your self. Try to relax and calm down. After the 3 months u can know exactly what u have. Good luck and god help u

Try not to stress out about it. Your nodes can be swollen for other reasons, and when you first come down with Aids, it can take a long time before you have any symptoms. Keep getting tested after some time goes by, and try to get your stress level down so that if you are sick with something else like a cold or virus, you can get better faster. As for having regrets, regrets are what keep you from putting yourself in harm's way in the future. Take this as a learning experience, and remember how it feels to be unsure. Good luck.

As said before, lymph nodes swell for a lot of reasons. Often times when we think we're feeling our lymph nodes, we're actually feeling other things in our neck.
HIV tests are pretty accurate at 36 days, but to be sure, get another one at 60-90 days from your last suspected exposure. It sounds like you're living in a state with a 3 month window period as opposed to the old 6 month one. After 3 months, if you're negative & have not put yourself at risk - then you are negative.
People have suggested a P24 or RNA test. They are very accurate because they test for the virus itself. But, they are very expensive & insurance may not cover them.

OK - Lymph 101:
The spleen, lymph nodes, and accessory lymphoid tissue are the secondary lymphoid organs. These organs contain a scaffolding that support circulating B- and T-lymphocytes and other immune cells like macrophages and dendritic cells. When micro-organisms invade the body or the body encounters other antigens (such as pollen), the antigens are transported from the tissue to the lymph. The lymph is carried in the lymph vessels to regional lymph nodes. In the lymph nodes, the macrophages and dendritic cells phagocytose the antigens, process them, and present the antigens to lymphocytes, which can then start producing antibodies or serve as memory cells to recognize the antigens again in the future.
SO - while it's true that an HIV infection can cause your lymph nodes to swell (they certainly did in my case), they can also be swollen for any untold number of reasons.
If you tested negative initially, your body may not be producing antibodies yet (that's the 6-8 week "false negative" window). The way to know for sure is to have them perform an assessment of the copies of HIV RNA per milliliter of blood (your viral load).
Then you'll know for sure. And let me know what you find out - HIV is serious, but it's not a death sentence.
