If you cant move it, go get an x-ray. If you have mobility, Ice it down, elevate it, maybe wrap it up with an ace bandage, you know around your thumb and wrist, if the pain and swelling persist see a dr.

Usually it throbs when it is broken and swells and turns purple or black. The only way to know if it is broken is to have an xray. Sometimes when there is too much swelling, a fracture won't show up right away. It is best to get it checked out so you don't injure it more.
