Does cancer come up on a blood test?
im curious if cancer shows up on a blood test. like if i went to the doctors, and they drew 3 things of blood and sent them to the lab. could they tell if you had any type of cancer?
yes, cancer can be detected through blood work. It is important for you to understand that many things can alter these tests and just because they are positive doesn't mean that you have cancer. If they were positive then the doctor would do xrays etc to validate the test results. also there are different blood tests for different types of cancer.

I'd say that no blood tests would show if the white count cells are outta wack.. My dad had lung cancer last October and he had pnumaia(Sp) and they detected his by a cat scan, and they got his in the early stages, so thats better they say.. my mom on the hand wasn't quite that lucky!

It depends what type of cancer you are looking for and what other symptoms you are having. The possibility of postate cancer shows up in the PSA blood test. tumors on your liver might be detected by the LDH levels. The key is talk with our doctor about any symptoms you hare having so that the Dr. and decide with you the next steps. e.g. MRI, ct scan, blood tests, etc.

Cancer may show up in the blood test, but it doesn't mean that a negative blood test means that there is no cancer. Cancer is often detected using a combination of tests and a physical examination.

If they are looking for the CA marker, then yes, it will show up.

Many times cancers do not show up in blood work. People can have Tumor marker drawn but these are only markers meaning they help us identify the stage of a cancer and it's response to chemo or radiation.
Prostate cancer can show in blood the PSA will be elevated.
Leukemia's can show up in blood. Platelets will be abnormal.
Multiple myeloma can show in urine tests.
Breast, colon cancer and- lymphoma's do not show up in blood work.

I know lymphatic cancer appears and probably leukemia, but I'm pretty sure that there are types of cancer that do not show up on blood tests.

It depends on whether they are looking for it, or if it's a blood type cancer. On a routine blood test it doesn't come up. In the 6 months before being diagnosed I had 3 blood tests, all of which came back normal.
