That's a natural and understanding feeling, because they sit you in that cold chair and you feel you can do nothing. But I strongly suggest you forget that and go to see him regularly. Those stories told by other here are really true. Your fear is nothing compared to all the suffering you can have if your gums and teeth get sick. Trust me! |

I also believe most people probably do fear the dentist (as I did, and I didn't see one for 20 years). With me, and what might be what has happened to you too, I had bad experiences with the dentist as a child. It really is important to go though (at least don't wait as long as I did), because the roots of my teeth started to turn black, and they had to do the scaling and root cleaning procedure, which isn't very pleasant. Good luck getting over your fear! |

The dental profession is one of the most feared careers out there. It is normal for you to have this fear. Talk to your dentist about your fears and reservations. She/he will be able to ease your. |

you shouldn't be! they're just dentist! you're paying them. they should be the one to be afraid of you because you might just run away and not pay them, right? |

Because the dentist hurts you. If I hurt you, you would be afraid of me, too. |

That is normal. I used to be but I finally got over it. What changed me is I neglected my teeth until it looked like I was going to have to go in for gum surgery. I had known a couple guys that had it & it scared me to death. It was awful. Anyhow, my dentist said I might avoid it if they deep cleaned my teeth every couple months for a period of time to be determined. I jumped at that & it did work. After four sessions he opened it up to four months for two more then told me I was O.K. & could go to normal six month checkups.
I haven't missed a checkup since. When I have a checkup I make my next appointment right then and somewhere in all of this mess I forgot my fear of the dentist. I guess my fear of surgery overshadowed it. |
