Will a Retainer Straighten My Teeth?
I am the age of 29, and I am trying to get a better smile, but I hate that one of my front teeth overlap the other by a little bit. I was wondering if I could wear a retainer instead of braces to correct the problem. Also I have already had the 2 left side wisdom teeth removed, and I plan on having the right side removed pretty soon. It is the right side front tooth that overlaps the left, so when I have the wisdom teeth on the right side removed, will that be enough room for the right front tooth to be moved back into postion?
It would probably be best for a dentist or orthodontist to answer that question. If one of your teeth is overlapping another one, something a little more serious then a retainer will be needed to fix it. Having your wisdom tooth taken out might help the teeth to move a little bit, but I think braces would be your best option.

I have to disagree with most on certain points here. First I am a dental Lab tech for 13 years now. Yes retainers main purpose is to retain the new position, but their are active retainers that will move teeth. Although not nearly as effective as braces they may move a single tooth or 2 short distances. Nobody here can tell you exactly what is best since we can't see your mouth. As stated before you should find a good orthodontist.

im not a dentist,but i do wear a retainer.i don't think it will,retainers just keep what you have in place,not straighten(i wanted to skip the braces too,but i couldn't,lol)

retainers do not make your teeth straight.. they are designed to keep your teeth where they are after you have worn braces for a few years....
so sorry but you willl have to get braces or invisaline is a good way to go if you dont want metal in your mouth...
cheers

Well I've had braces before I just got them off about six months ago... I'm 16 and I think you should get them, oh by the why thanks for asking this question you reminded me to pout my retainer back in,lol, so having braces is a big fat pain in the... but it was So worth it, I have a beautiful smile now and my teeth before the braces well...now i know thay cost a lot of MONEY but So Worth It. The retainer well not straiten your teeth but thay will give you a big headache when you get your braces off trust me I know.lol. I think you should get them really I do should! don't worry I'm not a orthodontist trying to sell you braces.lol. Well that's all ttly!!!

You might try those new kind of braces - that are not really braces at all, but fit over the teeth and are invisible. I believe they are called Invisalign. A friend of mine has had good luck with those!

Retainers are made to "retain" the position that orthodontia has created. Chances are (as I also experienced) once you have the two other wisdom teeth removed, your teeth will shift again, dramatically. There are many new methods of orthodontics available nowadays, including (although uncomfortable and difficult to maintain) reverse banding which is placing the brackets on the back of the teeth.

This is question that only your dentist can answer. We here cannot see your mouth and most of us have no dental training either. I do. But I would have to see you to be able to judge. Some time a retainer can be used to move teeth. So yes, it is possible.

No a retainer will hardly ever straighten your teeth, it's purpose is to keep your teeth from moving after you've had braces.
If you don't want metal braces and such, you could try Invisalign. It's a little more expensive than braces and if you're not good about wearing them they won't work very well, but if you're committed and wear them every single day they'll give you a good smile.
I'd reccommend seeing an orthodontist about it. :) Good luck.
You ask, I answer
a retainer keeps teeth in place after braces. try Invisalign braces.

i don't think so my mom and sis have had braces for years and the retainer just keeps the teeth from separating to the way they were or worse
