ow ow ow get plenty of pain killers in thats all i can say........

it depends really, theoretically you have root canal treatment to remove the dead root canal. if its dead it should't hurt. but sometimes the surrounding gum can hurt or the canal may still be infected so may cause some discomfort

I had 2 done recently with the help of 'twighlight sleep' gas. Although it is a long process (1 hour to complete) I felt very little pain afterwards and have another to do next week. Get the twilight gas it's fantastic, you will also have some vivid and inspired ideas while you are under the influence!

normally a root canal is not painful, most dentists make sure you are adequately anaesthetized ebfore they start the procedure and you will be pain free

once the first stage of the root canal is complete ie gaining access to the root canal system and removing most of the dead/ half dead nerve then a medicament is placed in the canals to disinfect and also dissolve any remnants of the nerve and the bugs it is this action which might cause some pain normally for around 48 hrs afterwards and some times the discomfort only starts 48-72 hrs after the procedure

They are not always opainful during or after, it just depends on you and the conditio your tooth was in. When i had one done i felt absolutely nothing afterwards or even during, and also no two root canals are the same, so dont worry about it, just pep yourself with pills if you need to.

My personal experince has been very good... I had a root canel a year ago and I felt no pain at all. During or after.

(I hate to confess, but being put under for the procedure was about the most restful sleep I ever had -- so in a sense it was actually a pleasant experience.)

So don't worry.. if you go to a good modern dentist, they will do a good job and you will likely have little or no pain.

I've had several, and there's no pain unless your tooth gets infected somehow which is another reason to get a root canal.

i've been there!!!!! depending on the dentist---not as bad as thought. pain afterwards should subside completely in two days, providing you rinse with wawrm water lots and take advil.

A well-done root canal job is absolute blessing compared to enduring the all-encompassing pain that you've been feeling with your bad tooth. I found it to be less uncomfortable than an average filling, and I don't recall it hurting significantly afterward.

Basically, your mouth is numbed the same as a filling; then the tooth is very carefully drilled directly into the numbed nerve, until all of that rotted nerve is removed (which is what was already killing you, any way). Then a little (?plastic?) rod is inserted where the nerve was -- this is for stability. Then it is packed with an antibiotic (I think) and sealed off. Just like any injury, you may feel a little discomfort for a day or two while it adjusts, but ain't no monster story like some have told.

And here another little secret to uncover for you.
-->> The pain you experience (in the dentists chair) is in direct proportion to the degree that you get yourself all worked up about it. When your anxiety and stress runs you amock, you body/brain senses "the tiger is after you....RUN!" and your body responds accordingly, which of course you cannot do there, so that really makes you nuts. This is true for any pain and anxiety that you experience. REMEMBER -- You can always CHOOSE to BE CALM.

So what to do about it? GET REALLY, REALLY CALM!!
Slow, deep breathing (Bio-chemically) tells yourself, your brain and entire system that you are safe and there's nothing to fear...regardless of what's going on around you. Breath slowly and focus on something that your mind can handle during all that.

Likewise, I always do this when I'm on my way to the dentist's, so that when I finally sit in his chair, within a few moments, I'm already ready there. Also know that this improves the effectiveness of the anesthetics they give you, as well as how fast you heal from it, too. So keep smilin'!

Love and Light!
