If it's a sprain, the ER isn't going to be able to do anything for you exept what your doctor will do, which is give you a script for a few pain pills to get you past the first few days. Do the ice pack, 1500 mg of Extra Strength Tylenol (3 pills) tonight and get an appointment with your doctor tomorrow. |

If your friend's mom is the one giving you advice, listen to what she says. If the advice is coming from your friend, ask his mom! :) ER's are expensive and if you really don't need one and everything is functioning just fine, listen to the advice from the nurse you know. Her opinion is fairly valuable (and free!). |

No, it might be a small cramp or something. Wait, you're next step would be to see your ppc not the ER. |

happened to me about 5 years ago. i didnt go to ER and subsequently lost all use of my right hand! quite surprisingly really as it was my left hand that had a brick dropped on it!!!!! |

I hope you put an ice pack on your hand to prevent swelling. I personally think if you waited 6 hours before deciding maybe you should go to the ER, your being a little dramatic.
The ER visit is going to cost you thousands. It would be better if you go to the overnite convenient care or call your physician before you drum up a huge bill.
Again I doubt your going to do more damage now that you have waited 6 hours. |

Get some ice on it! If it's sprained, ice on it in the first 24 hours will help you out tremendously. Sometimes a sprain can hurt more than an actual fracture/break, but tomorrow, you should have a doctor look at it. Just because your friend's mom is a nurse, doesn't make your friend a nurse, and even if her mom looked at it, she obviously doesn't have x-ray vision and only xrays will rule out a break/fracture. Hope feels better soon. |

If the pain is some what tolerable I wouldn't go to the ER tonight. You'll get charged an arm and leg for the same thing that your Dr. could tell you tomorrow in his office. Try putting ice on it and taking ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve), and lie down with your hand elevated on a pillow with your ice pack. If the pain becomes unbearable definitely go to the ER. It probably is just a sprain, or soft tissue injury. Hope you feel better! |

It perhaps hurts more with swelling so put ice on it to get the swelling down. That is what they are going to do at E.R. first thing anyway and perhaps tell you that it is a sprain and give you some tylenol, which you could perhaps do at home with less the expense. I find sprains can actually hurt worse than a break. Your friend's mom is probably right if it functions properly. What did you do to it? |

Why don't you wait until the morning and see how bad it is and if it's still bad then go to the hospital. Or if you really can't do anything then go. |

Yeah i would go...even if it is just a sprain they will give you some pain medication to help deal with it.
Or try your doc....ring them and tell them you need to see the doc asap as you are in a lot of pain....better to be safe than sorry.
Hope you feel better soon. |

GO to the ER! you need an X-ray. even though it works it could still be damaged and need to be stabilized so it can heal properly. They will also give you something for the pain.
(RN MS CCRN CNS C, and then some) |

Go have it checked and get some meds. You could have any number of things wrong even though it still functions. |

Try putting an ice pack on it, and take some ibuprofen.
If it gets worse or is the same, then you should maybe go to the E.R.
Hope it feels better! |

well of course, if your in pain; go to the ER.

you shouldn't be typing with whatever hand is hurting. |

Do you know what you did to it?? It needs rest, ice, compression and elevation. Could you have possibly broken something? I broke my wrist a few years ago. The hand turned blue right away. But that was from a fall. If it hurts like you say, go to the ER. They will at least x ray it and then you will know for sure and not be guessing as to what to do for it. |

Sprains do hurt worse than breaks sometimes. If a nurse told you you'll be alright, take her advice.
You can wait and if it doesn't fix itself, then go. Of course, the problem with that is, if you wait too long, there's nothing they can do to help. So make your decision quick. |

You should go to the ER. My neighbor (again, a nurse) told my sister that her wrist was "only a sprain"..turns out it was broken and since she hadnt gotten it set right away, she needed pins and stuff in it.
GO NOW! |

what did you do to it? |

What happened to your hand? If your friend's mom is a nurse and says it's not broken, you can probably trust her. But I'd highly recommend that you take extra strength tylenol and ice your hand (don't put the ice directly on your skin though). Stabilize it with a wrap so that you don't cause more damage while you're sleeping tonight. And get to a doctor's office tomorrow and have them look at it.
Follow-up: You know what? I've rethought my answer after reading what everyone wrote. Go to the ER. You'll feel better knowing that it's just a sprain (or not) and they'll wrap it and give you some pain meds and better advice then we can give you here. So... go! |
