You should really wean yourself off them slowly with the advice of your doctor. I came off mine without any advice, I just stopped taking them. I used to feel really light headed all the time and I would have dizzy spells quite often. Also I ended up with the feeling of having a lump in my throat all the time, I ended up going back to the dr's and he put me straight back on them. If you do want to come off them, go see your dr first. |

i think with any long term drug your meant to be weaned off slowly...if you just stop taking them it could cause problems |

I came off them without weaning myself off and I went right back to square one. Hell depression again!!! Not sure if you would call it a side effect though? My doctor said that I needed to go and see him before I decided to come off them again and we would work out a regime of weaker doses/ taking them less frequently or something like that. |

Does your doctor know that you are not taking your medication? Your doctor will know what doses you need to be taking. |

Okay, this really depends on the antidepressant.
With mine, Lexapro, I could possibly go through withdrawls. With Welbutrin, I had NO problems coming off of it.
It really depends on the antidepressant, let us know which one and maybe we could help better. Good luck, and congrads on getting off of them! |

Indeed, you are sopposed to wean off them by reducing the dose over several weeks, if not a couple of months.
talk to your doctor about it.
the way in which most of them work is by raising the level of seratonin in the brain which if drops by a certain amount causes depression, so just coming straight off them is bad as it can cause this to happen all over again starting you back at the beginning.
side effects will be very slight if you come off them properly and following your docs advice will most likely help keep you off them. many people that dont wean off them will usually have another bout and have to go back on them anyway. |

I had the shakes, confusion and could not get out of bed. I was pregnant and had to come off them, however gone back on other safe alternative now.
Weaning down is always the best way |

It depends which you are taking.
Most modern anti-depressants are non addictive...that doesn't mean you can just stop taking them. The BMA recommends that doses are over a period of weeks or months, depending on the doses you are taking.
For example a 175mcg would be taken to 150mcg for a week, then 125mcg for a week etc until the dose it stopped.
This way the bodies reactions, and your feelings can be monitored and action taken if the results are adverse.
If you have stopped taking meds of your own accord, I would see your GP asap, so that s/he can monitor you.
If you are on old style anti depressants or any type of Valium then you should see you GP before attempting to withdraw.
Good luck, take care

coming off anti depressants is a real positive sign, you say that you've not taken any for a week now ,well the worse is over , keep the positiveness up and be confident, try to improve get getting out and about ,I don't know if your still working or not if so try to get into work even if only to see the people you've worked with ,if not then try to get involved with a small group building on the confidence and positiveness, you'll benefit from all that you do even if it take a long time keep on |

When I came off mine I did it very gradually! Very slowly, My Dr eventually gave me the final boost saying really I'd already done it, as what i was taking wasn't doing anything!
Yes I'm sure you could go back onto a weaker dose if you are struggling! Don't struggle, it shouldn't be too hard! I have had them several times as I have had 4 children and 3 times had postnatal depression, and had them, a couple of times in between! This has to be the longest time I have been without them! Good luck! Oh and remember the best time to come off them is spring time, not going into winter! Also christmas causes a lot of stress! |

Theres alsorts of side effects really - to many to list.
You may feel worse or even better - you might get snappy with people and get a short temper.
You may find you feel 10 times better than when you were on them.
If you can - stay off them - I know it easy to say but I've been there and done that - they worked for about a month but then just made me depressed without caring where as before I was depressed and cried about it all the time... |

It takes about 3 weeks to get over any withdrawal symptoms. You may feel jittery, anxious, unable to sleep, frightened etc. get some advice and support form your Gp Maybe you can reduce the dose gradually but you need to ask a doctor. Good luck |

Well it depends on what kind of anti-depressant you are on. I noticed someone made the statement that it is a positive sign that you got off. Well it ISN'T. If your doctor put you on them then you should be on them and do not take yourself off without consulting them first. If you have a mental illness they you will need to stay on meds probably for the rest of you life. depending on which one. Mental side effects of course will be all of the feelings you had when you were depressed. However, if you are taking Effexor, a atypical newer drug, you will feel like ****. Effexor is not addictive, but it gives you horrible side effects when you stop taking it abruptly such as tremors, dizziness, tireness, and basically you will feel like you have the flu. Although I love Effexor, it is one of the best anti-depressants out there, it has horrible withdraw effects. All I can say is talk to your doctor.
Why did you get off of them in the first place? |

you should consult your doctor about coming off anti-depressants. If you do it too fast it might have bad side effects and you can go back to being depressed. |
