How long does one normally live with Leukimia?? My friend has just been diagnosed!!?

I really don't know, but I think that most can fight this disease. Just be there for your friend and be positive that he/she can beat this. The mental attitude has a lot to do with survival.

My mom was also diagnosed with Leukemia in 2001. Truth is it really all depends on the person, the way their body reacts to treatment and how advanced the cancer is. For my mom, she fought it for 6 months. I cant recall the exact name of the Leukemia. Something along the lines of Acute.. something. There are many ups and downs with this type of cancer as it is in your bone marrow. Im sorry to hear about your friend, and I wish them all the luck in the world.

Depends on the kind. ALL is pretty treatable.

The advances in medicine for that disease have come a very long way in recent years. Your friend should search out the best course of action for their particular needs. Websites on the internet for Leukemia (make sure you spell it right) Foundations should help out a great deal. The survival rate now days is extremely high compared to 20 years ago, so keep positive!

How old is your friend?
Leukemia is divided into several types with chronic and acute varieties. Here is more info on the various types.
http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6X_Leukemia_Classifications_24.asp
Chronic leukemia is not currently curable but people with chronic leukemia often live for very long periods of time, 20 years or more with the new drugs now available and also depending on their age at diagnosis. Acute leukemia is a much more dangerous disease especially for older people. If your friend is a child or young adult then acute disease can sometimes be cured with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Cure rates are increasing rapidly. If the person is over age 70 then acute leukemia is often fatal.
Good luck to your friend. You can read more here.

There are various types and stages. Treatment varies and again, each person reacts to the treatment differently. Call your local American Cancer Society or go on their web page, I think it's www.americancancersociety.org. They have the most up to date information for the non-medical person that isn't scary but gives you stats and information on supporting your friend as well as support groups and information sites as well. Personally, I worked with a woman/girl who was diagnosed with a form called Non-hodgkins at stage 4, she reacted well to mixed therapies and is still alive and well and healthy, 18 years later.
