How much vomiting is to expected during chemotherapy?

Not all chemotherapy causes the side effect of nausea and vomiting. My son is on a home chemo that he takes daily and there are no side effects at all. However, he has been on protocols, especially the high dose chemo which caused nausea and vomiting. There are plenty of anti-nausea meds to control the nausea. Basically make sure you stay on a regular schedule and rotate the meds so you're always covered. It's easier to control the nausea than it is the vomiting .. so the key is to stop the nausea before you get sick. My son also slept alot during that time. He had the high dose chemo for about nine months and vomited maybe once or twice before catching on that he needed a regular schedule.

There are very good anti-nausea medications, but they must be taken exactly as prescibed. Timing is important.

I vomited once on the first treatment and learned my lesson.

As others have said...sometimes lots, sometimes none, depending on the patient's reactions, the drugs given etc.

Don't try to be "brave"...if you are given anti-nausea drugs, take them! And if you are getting side-effects, tell the doctors. There are various things they can do to make chemo more tolerable...but only if they know.

The docs won't think you are whinging, they want to make this as OK for you as possible!

Personal experience, every darn day..

This depends on the patient and the type of chemo used. luckily in this age there are many meds given prior to each chemo treatment to prevent or decrease symptons related to chemo-therapy. Discuss this with your dr. or chemo nurse. I have seen some patients go thru the entire chemo treatment with NO side effects!!

sometimes none.. I had 6 sessions and I did not vomit one time....

You have to stay AHEAD of the nausea by taking the anti-nausea pills BEFORE you become nauseous. If you wait until you become nauseous, then you don't even want to look at a pill.

Eat bland, chilled or medium warm high protein items to keep blood levels up to help keep the chemo appts on track. Cold hard boiled eggs, Arbys or Rax roast beef sandwiches, Sliders, cottage cheese, jello, crackers and chilled bottled water are good.

Keep immodium on hand if the diarrhea gets bad (ask the doctor if ok first).
