It depends on your dentist... A root canal can be done painlessly, but some dentists do not take the time to make it painless.
Your initial injections will sting pretty good, but after about 3 seconds, all is numb. As with most people, the drill is the worst part. The sound of that damned drill. |

I have had it done twice. The first time, it was like having a dustbin inserted in the rectum. The second time my darling little Latvian dentist did it without me even knowing. Damn these immigrants!!!! |

No they really shouldn't be. You might experience some pain the first day or so but with all the new technology it should be pretty painless. The pain you will feel is from them digging so deep into the roots and if the dentist isn't gentle about it you will have more pain. You should be fine with some painkillers. |

I had it done about 10 years ago and remember wondering afterwards what all the fuss was about. It really wasn't that bad at all (and I usually hate the dentist). I think I was just expecting it to be so bad that I was relieved when it wasn't.
You'll be fine - don't worry!! |

If you have a good dentist, it shouldn't be too bad, although of course it depends on the severity of the condition.
I had it a few years ago. You may want to ask for a topical anaesthetic on the gum before you get the main shot - I remember it was a bit deeper than normal, but once it had set in it was fine and it was just like having a very, very long filling. (and I am terrified of needles, so if I can do it, you can!)
It wasn't too bad at all. Good luck. |

Once they numb you there is no pain, just pressure. Every time I have had a root canal and I have had about 3 of them, it is because I am in pain already, 2 abscessed teeth and 1 cracked molar. So any discomfort from the root canal procedure was a welcome relief from the pain I was experiencing already. |

I had to have that done - and when I told people I was getting it done, they said it would be sooo painful and they took a couple of days off work, blah, blah, blah...anyway I had it done and it didn't hurt at all! - I had some discomfort but went back to work the next day! I suppose it depends on your pain threshold??? |

No, normally root canal treatment is NOT painful. Not having it done is what is painful. By the time you need a root canal, you usually have pain in your tooth. If you have an infection, you would have been given antibiotics to clear it up and also the pain. A root canal removes the pulp and infection from the canal in the root and replaces it with medication so that you don't have any more pain. |
