I have the same problem and I went to the dentist they revered me to a specialist....we thought it was my wisdom teeth but it wasn't I got them removed and it still pops outta place they told me it was this elastic band thing that is behind my jaw that slips off.....they also thought it was grinding of my teeth at night definatly go to your dentist!!

Alonzo
jim b kinda has the rite idea! it is a elastic band type of thing which is small muscle the helps keep the condoyle and the articular disk in place.
tooth mobility or tooth loss is maybe the cause of popping cus this effects its contact points and the relationship of the jaw. I've studied this in my dental class...it can be referred to as a tmj dysfunction (tempromandibular joint dysfunction). the jaw is the most complex joint we have, it has two joints, which allow it to both rotate and to translate (slide). Clicking is common, as are POPPING motions and deviations in the movements of the joint. It is considered a TMJ disorder when pain is involved. unless you have pain i wouldn't be to concerned. jus don't get into the habit of popping ya jaw whenever u get bored...its the sort of thing that camels do lol take care.

Hey, I feel for ya. I have the same prob my dentist said that i grind my teeth in my sleep and to get a mouth guard that you wear at night (and you can't swallow it i checked L.O.L) you can get them at wal-mart. I hope this helps!

Talk to your dentist about getting a referral to an orthodontist or a tmd specialist.

Stop chewing gum - anything that's repetitive in motion with that joint can cause trouble.

Try not to open your mouth really big (like biting into Subway sandwiches, etc.). Even stifle your yawns.

Cut back on your caffeine intake.

Regular exercise will help if you feel you're stressed out.

Alternate cold & moist heat packs on the joint and taking tylenol or advil will help to alleviate the discomfort. If you're a minor, make sure it's Ok with your parents before you take anything.

If you notice you're waking up to sore teeth, jaw joints, you could be clenching or grinding your teeth at night. A hard acrylic "splint", also called a niteguard will prevent you from clenching/grinding and will be thick enough to keep your joint in a more comfortable position as you sleep.

Hope this helps.

Go to the dentist and see an expert.

I had this problem too. You really need to go to your doctor/dentist to get it diagnosed but i'm guessing it is what i had. i cant remember exactly what it was but i think it is similar to temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ (Any problem with the way this joint is functioning is basically refered to as TMJ). Basically its to do with your cartilage, it is supposed to go in between your jaw but for some people it goes out of place. usually your jaw slides to the side a little when it pops. It can be caused by trauma, or just naturally. i went to my doctor and he gave me some exercises to do. this one should help

press your fingers on both sides of your jaw (up by your ears, just below your cheekbones) and slowly open and close your mouth ten times, making sure it does not move out of place by applying pressure with your fingers. do this daily

if it carries on getting bad, you really need to see a doctor and they may have to do an operation where they have a look inside the joint, and will clean it meaning that the cartilage will no longer pop out of place.

as i said i had this problem, and mine got so bad that it would actually lock. you need to really concentrate on not sliding your jaw to either side when you open it, because i found that i did this out of habit. and if your jaw feels painful/like its stuck do the above exercise. i've now been discharged from the doctors (before they were going to give me the operation) because mine has gotten so much better. it will take time though, with me it took about 6 months, and it wont be perfect, but its so much better and hardly bothers me now!
