Do you put heat or ice on a sore shoulder?
I didn't really hurt it seriously but its sore from repetition of using it (basketball) so its been sore for a couple days? Do I use ice or heat?
You alternate.....ice for 15 min. then heat for 15 min. Do this for an hour. You can also put some hot rub on it before playing. You can get sports ointments at any store.

Both...Start with heat first...Apply heat to the area for approximately 5 minutes or so and then put an ice pack on it for about 2 minutes. It relaxes the muscle and any swelling that might not be visible from playing basketball. I have found that going to hot to cold repetively works the best.

Use ice when the pain has decreased and when it is starting to feel normal again you should be able to switch to heat to get the blood flowing unrestricted again. When it feels O.K again you can start to stretch and strengthen it. Good luck. Hope this helps.

ice when you first hurt it or after basketball games, it reduces the inflamation and helps with pain. later on heat can help by bringing blood to the area to speed healing, sports creams and icyhot are good too.

ice...you want to reduce inflammation after activity.

Well the chiropractor told me that although heat feels good, it causes more inflamation. He recommended ice packs for about 20-30 minutes several times a day. Also, I've use emu oil (in a lotion form) on sore spots and it really works. Even got my dad using it. Good luck :o)

DON'T heat anything that is sore after activity, it will increase the inflammation in that area. Ice for 20 minutes every hour as you have pain, at least two cycles after activity.
If you are going to heat, heat the area for about 15-20 minutes BEFORE activity, followed by stretching, then activity.
I recommend to avoid heat until you are pain free at rest. if your shoulder is only sore after activity, then use heat before. But if you are sore even when you are just resting, avoid heat.
