Forms of self harm?
Should people who hit themselves, seek help as much as those who cut? Or should they keep quiet as its more likely to be ignored and it isn't as harmful?

I know many people think it's attension seeking, no matter what the method but if you are going to answer with something of that nature or hurtful, please don't..have some respect for people in pain.

All kinds of self harm 'count' as self harm all the same - just because you're doing more or less visable dammage doesn't mean that you are feeling different inside. Aslo hitting yourself can lead to self harmimng in different ways like cutting yourself. So yes you should get help with this. Are you asking about yourself / a friend, or just in general? If you're asking about yourself then you're doing good even to acknowledge you have a problem - there are mental health charities that can help you - start by seeing your dr, or duty social work can also refeer you, or if you're 18 or younger childline is a great place to call as they have heaps of details of places that can help you and can put you in touch with them. Hope that helps xx

personnaly i think the worst form of self harm is sittinig on you bum all day long never doing any exercise and eating fatty food, thats much worse for you than cutting yourself or hitting yourself or whatever. my attitude to self harm is really that it is for the most part a sort of form of emotional self medication or even just self help if you hitting yourself for that reason then you should seek help for the underlying emotional problem thats causing you to do it, no one can refuse to see you if you seek help for emotional difficulties.

NoMeS.
Yeah, I think they need help as well. All forms of self harm should be treated. Self Injury is a symptom of deeper problems, if you take care of the deeper problems then the SI can be properly taken care of.

Good Luck! :)

flips
Of course they need to seek help.
I used to cut myself but not to seek attention, I was always alone and never showed it to anyone.
It was a way to release my anger and sadness. I should have seeked help then

Not enough is done to help these people, example if you had a bad Heart then people would be very sympathetic.
However if you have a Brain illness most people will shun the person who is ill, I know because we had a good few friends or should I say so called.
My wife has Bi Polar when she had a bad TIME all THE SO CALLED DISAPPEARED!!!
Self harm can be cutting , Banging the Head as you said hitting, overdosing and Drowning their are probably more but that is an example.
So if you see people like this try and HELP the because they won`t do harm to you and at the end of the Day it Could happen to anyone .
Mental Illness has no BORDERS Rich, Poor, Young and Old and all the colours you can think of.
Keep Well.

First, it is harmful... I guess I 2would wounder why this is going on in the first place. Hitting is a form of self mutalation just as cutting is. From your statement it seems like you are minimizing this to be LESS harmful as other forms of self mutalation, however this is often how things progress from bad to worse just like a disease. My advice to you is to seek some kind of mental health counseling or talk to a counselor about this problem. If you are ashamed to do this just talk as if it is a friend that needs help.

I think all forms of self mutilation are equally serious. And if whoever you are talking about feels the need to get help, then they shouldn't hold back from getting it because it's not as "serious" as cutting. Anyone who self mutilates should get help (professional, friends, or some group) and/or find a different way to cope with stuff. That's what I did, but whoever it is has to want the help. Anyway, good luck, lots of us know what this is like and we're here to talk to.

**tracey**
i think any form of self harm, whether it be cutting or hitting needs to be discussed with someone who can help. the person self harming is obviously crying out to be helped but may not know who to approach or where to start i think it is a serious issue and should not be ignored

ppl who hit themselves are just as bad as those who cut and should get help

Deliberate self harm is not always easy to treat. It can often resolve as the person gets older/more mature. It is possible that a psychiatrist can help to uncover the cause of this self harm and may be able to offer a treatment for it, they should definitely be able to suggest ways of managing it. You have nothing to lose by finding out if they are going to be of any help.
Good Luck

yes i think they should seek help.
maybe it doesnt seem as harmful as cutting yourself as it doesnt risk cuttin throught major arteries but its stil hurtin urself in some way and theres somethin goin on in ur head makin u do that or maybe ur hurtin inside throught stress or just sadness, but maybe talkin 2 some one will help the hurt go away instead of physically hutin urself.
talkin 2 someone realy does help i have been there.
i found that talkin 2 someone i didnt no helped rather than talkin 2 sum1 like ur parents because i felt embarassed to talk to people i knew. at least a stranger cant judge u in that way.

EricaG
Yes, because,( and I'm not being mean), it's just a little mental problem like cutting and can leave behind physical reminders sore arms, rashes from constant hitting, and bruises, so someone should defiantly seek help

azure
Self-harm can be anything from cutting yourself, to hitting yourself. Often people will hit themselves instead of cutting, as they can hide it more easily than scars or cuts. So yes, it is just as much of a problem, as it is the motive behind it that the people need to get sorted out and talk about. No-one will ignore someone who is self-harming, no matter in what form.

iwannabe007
my wife is a self harmer Ive asked her why she do it and she says its some kinda release she harms her self when stressed my wife is what is called a self harming schizophrenia who suffers from depression

Anyone who is thinking about hurting themselves needs to get help asap. It doesnt matter the form of self harm it still needs to be treated. Hitting yourself can lead to other forms if not treated.

I think anyone who hurts themselves without actually being life threatening should do what they want and not be coerced into getting help. They do need to think about what they're doing and what they get from it, an hopefully as a result will see that they do need some kind of specialist intervention. It's your life, as long as you're not hurting anyone else, who's buisness is it ?

Alfirin06
I wouldnt say it was less harmful,if you hit yourself hard enough you could break bones! I think if you feel that you need help then go and get it. No matter what kind of self harm you do,whether it be hitting, cutting, burning, pulling out hair, misusing drugs...whatever.If you want help and want to stop then you have every right to do that.A good doctor will not ignore hitting as a form of self harm, they will help you.

People who say that self harming is attention seeking do not understand and have no interest in understanding. Self harm is a coping mechanism, a way of dealing with emotions which are too painful. For a self harmer, they feel they have no other way of expressing themselves and self harming helps them blow off steam,as it were. I think a lot of people get angry about self harming because it scares them, they cannot understand why someone would want to hurt themselves and possibly they are afraid that the person might hurt someone else.

I don't know if you asked this question in relation to yourself or someone you know.If it is yourself-seek help if YOU feel you want it,don't be ashamed of what you do or the way in which you do it. If someone you know self harms, just support them,be there for them if they want to talk and try and understand.

Peace.x

people who self harm usually describe a realease after doing so which comes from the pain. I suggest if you want that kind of release to hold an ice cube as this will not harm u but it will hurt after a while.

All forms of self harm are a very serious problem. It does not matter the means. When i do it, it is to transfer mental pain to physical pain (which is preferable to me) Some do it because they are so very angry. Please seek help now. start with you physician and he/she should suggest where to go from there. I am thinking about you.

Hey, yes you should seek just as much help. Any type of self harm is dangerous and hitting yourself can be just as dangerous if not more dangerous than cutting. I really am glad that you asked for advice, it shows you really do care about yourself. I hope I could help and wish you the best of luck.

I took up smoking because it was harmful as a kind of self harm. There are lots of ways to hurt yourself.

I would say that any kind of self harm that causes actual injury should be treated as seriously. Not everything I used to do to myself left scars (a lot did) but a lot of it was actually pretty bad at the time, like the occasion I deliberately dislocated by shoulder.

Yes i think help should be sought because there is an underlying reason behind self harm which needs to be resolved.
Some people do think it is attention seeking but if that is the case then why do people hide that they are doing it. Many people are ashamed that they self harm.
I was told that it can be a way of diverting inner pain by making yourself hurt physically or it could be because the person feels angry or guilty. I selfharmed because i felt i had hurt others and wanted to hurt myself as punishment.
My daughter used to bite herself and gets help with anger management.

You should seek help,It's not attention seeking.I used to self harm too in loads of different ways.People will take you serious and help you,Good luck i know how hard it is.

Anytime that someone does something to themselves that inflicts pain then it is a form of "self harm" whether it be cutting, hitting themselves, clenching thier fists until thier nails cut into thier hands making them bleed, biting.. etc.

In ANY of these cases, the person needs some sort of therapy! They are doing it because they have TRUE mental anguish and causing physical pain sometimes helps in "dulling" the mental pain they are suffering!

If this is you or a friend of yours I would get them (or you) help! If not treated properly then this can escalate and possibly result in suicide or god forbid murder or harm to someone else!

Real hard question to answer but I think anyone that hurts them selves in anyway should seek help. I don't like the word attention seeker as most people that self harm are not attention seekers. There is a great stigma about self harm but I have seen it in all different forms and its not good. no professional should ignore anyone that comes to them for help and if they do that is very morally wrong and stupid as the hitting could lead to more and should/does need dealing with.

That's what I do - self hitting, rather than cutting. I don't do it often - just when things get too much. I'm a member of a website for the National Self Harm Network. Joining may be a first step to getting help.

its not attention seeking i self harm but havent done in a few months i find when im angry it takes all the pressure away so u dont feel so angry or upset but after i always feel guilty. i havent seeked help but i wud advise anyone who self harms to go to your g.p because it is a sign of depression and it can get very serious.even talkin to someone can make it feel much better but only if your taken seriously..if someone talks please listen.

Lisa
If you want to hurt yourself in any way then you are not well, get help and try to get better

self harming is not a way of attention seeking..... most people who self harm HATE having too much attention drawn to them... it's more to do with controlling your body, and the endorphin release that u get when u hurt yourself... any form of self harm should be taken seriously as 99 times out of 100 it is an outward expression of an inner problem (like stress, depression, mental illness & obsessive compulsivebehaviour)

There are many ways to self harm, most of which we probably don't hear about, obviously as self harm happens secretly and there is an element of shame about it . Most people associate self harm with teenagers cutting themselves but this is not the case. It happens to all ages in all walks of life in many different ways. It doesn't matter what method you use and what degree of harm you inflict on yourself ,if you do anything to harm yourself then there is a problem. It annoys me when people say that it is attention seeking, I don't believe anyone would inflict pain on themselves just for attention and if they did then there would be a problem there too. . Self harming has only recently been discussed in public so openly as mental illness is still taboo and swept under the carpet a great deal. Many people who self harm injure themselves badly, scarring for instance, it must be dreadful to face these scars day after day being constantly reminded of the problem but you just can't stop. Very often the people closest are unaware it's happening and when they find out they are so shocked and just don't know how to deal with it. Probably they are afraid if this is brought out in the open it will worsen the situation and that person will lose trust in them. People who self harm should never feel afraid to talk to someone or be afraid of being judged, easy to say from someone who hasn't suffered with it. It is an illness not just a phase as some people think and we should all be better informed about it. Above all if you do self harm you have nothing to be ashamed of and seek help, no one should suffer unneccesarily!
