I had to have one 2 years ago after I had a subdural hematoma and was in a coma. I believe it was to help me breathe as I was in a coma, I am fine now only have other health problems not connected to the trachostomy.

when the airway becomes blocked either through injury or obstruction in order that the patient doesnt suffocate an incision is made through the trachea (located at the base of the throat) and a tube inserted to facilitate breathing.

They are done either as an emergency or planned.

The purpose is to relieve an upper airway obstruction, such as a growth, cancer, swelling (anaphylaxis), choking, or if a patient requires long-term intubation and ventilation. These are just a few examples.
