Did I sprain or Break my Ankle?
Oct. 27th I rolled my ankle on a swimming noodle in my garage. At first it did not hurt, but it did take me a moment to get up becasue I could not feel my foot. I did put ice on it and continued to do so thru-out the week. It was hard to walk on it the first few days without limping. It hurt pretty bad, but my pain tolerance is very high. It is Nov. 7th and the swelling has not gone down, although I continued to ice it for 24 hours and then heat and then ice through the frist week. I still have a constant pain, but it's not bad. It's just a unconfortable ache. I've never had a sprain stay swollen this long, nor have I ever broke anything. Could it be broke? I do not have any health insurance and really can't afford to go to get it ex-rayed.
If you can move it it is probably not broken. You should get it checked out anyway.

You have several good answers here. I will same I did the same thing and it took a long time for the ankle to heal. It hurt for a long time and was very easy to re-twist. You need to stabilize it as much as possible if you won't go to the doctor. Try wearing you hiking boots laced up to the top. I had to do this for about two years with high top tennis shoes. They were very in at the time, but get as high as possible and draw down snug but don't cut off circulation. Elevate for swelling and whenever possible. Draw up a second chair to put your foot on at work and don't stand on it too long.
This video from Mayo shows what you probably did.

Check out the other info on their site too. Maybe you could go to a walk (limp?) in clinic if you can't afford the incurance now?

The only way to know for sure is to get ur ankle x-rayed... no insurance really isnt an excuse not to seek medical attention, u can go to the ER they will have to treat u even if u dont have insurance...
trust me u want to get this checked out as soon as possible... I rolled my ankle pretty badly during cheerleading practice my senior year, and i didnt go to the doc because i had nationals that weekend and i wasnt going to miss them... I know that it was stupid but i didnt care, anyway long story short... i never had it looked at and now 5 years later i am still having problems with instability

I've broken my ankle and tore ligaments in both my ankles before. When I broke it, my ankle was bruised. If yours is bruised too (black/blue/purple-ish), its most likely broken as well. If it's not bruised, it's sprained. You should NOT walk on it either way. That's very important. Use crutches and immobilize your ankle. It's still swollen despite your ice/heat treatment because you keep walking on it. When I broke my ankle on the football field, it hurt a lot, and the pain was immediate. If you didn't feel pain immediately in yours, I don't really know how to explain that... Either way, the key is to immobilize and not walk on it. Let it heal. Good Luck.
PS: That's if you truly can't afford professional treatment.

I'm really sorry that happened to you. I did the same thing in my garage on Oct 10...I rolled my ankle & twisted my knee and heard a popping sound. I walked with my swollen ankle anyway. The bruising & swelling was really bad even after all the rest, ice, & elevation. By the second week, the swelling went down but I was left with an unbearable pain and unable to walk. I finally went to the Dr in week 3 and found out it's both sprained & fractured! (By the way, everyone that has seen me treats me like I'm a complete idiot for not going in sooner.) I had x-rays that showed the fracture, a doppler scan to make sure I didn't have a blood clot, & I'm still waiting results on an MRI for my knee, as I twisted & fell on it as well. Right now I'm in my 4th week of healing, having moderate pain, and walk with an Aircast & crutches. I do have clearance from the Dr to bear as much weight as tolerable on my ankle. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week where they said it's important to get full range of motion back in my ankle or it will atrophy. Don't want that to happen. I'm suppose to do ankle stretches & strengthening with a towel & theraband twice daily, but I only manage to do them once after my shower. Personally, I think at the very least you should go to an Urgent Care facility and be seen by somebody ASAP. I know you don't have insurance, and you are in tough spot with that. But I think you really need to find out the extent of your injury so you don't have to be left wondering if you're doing the right thing for yourself. I wish you well. And I hope I helped in some small way...

You need an x-ray, because it sounds like you might have broken it, if not, ripped some connective tissue.
Have someone take you to the doctor or ER as soon as possible.

You need to go get it x-rayed insurance or not because if you don't you might have some damage that needs to be treated medically. If you don't get it checked out and you do more damage it will cost you more money in the long run if you damage it more so get it checked out.

i dont think it is broken but i can be a very serious sprain or a fracture. you really should get it checked out and if yu really dont want to go to the doctor stay off it and and go to your local drug store and get a brase for it this way if there is something wrong with it you wont mess it up too much.. and dont ice yur ankle to much because it messes up the blood flow. do 20 minutes on 30 mintues off
