By the degree of pain. go to a phyisical thereapist and he might be able to evaluate you or something. If worse comes to worst, get an MRI =]

* Sprain. A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments. Ligaments are tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect one bone to another. They help to stabilize joints, preventing excessive movement. Sprains are frequently caused by rapid changes in direction or by a collision. Common locations for sprains are your ankles, wrists and knees.
* Strain. A strain is a stretching or tearing of muscle. This type of injury often occurs when muscles suddenly and powerfully contract — or when a muscle stretches unusually far. This is called an acute strain. But overuse of certain muscles over time can lead to a chronic strain. People commonly call muscle strains "pulled" muscles. Hamstring and back injuries are among the most common strains.
Treatment depends on the severity of the injury. Many times, self-care measures and over-the-counter pain medications are all that you'll need.

The affected area will swell and sometimes be bruised. It often hurts to move it around and when you do you either receive a sharp shooting pain or it is stiff to move. If you suspect that you have torn a ligament from a fall ect then I would suggest seeing a doctor to make sure that it has nothing to do with your bone. If the ligament it torn it may require surgery to repair it. Put it on ice until you can see a doctor. Best of luck. Hope this helps.

if you've torn a ligament, you pretty much shouldnt be able to move the joint without it hurting A LOT!!
if you think you've done that, go down a&e or to your docs.
my bf snapped his ligament in his knee playing football, he couldnt move, had to have it replaced with a tendon from his other knee, was on crutches for ages!!
if you've sprained a muscle you should have swelling on/around the joint/muscle, and if you've strained it, it'll just ache real bad.
nurofen gel is a good pain killer for muscle strains!

With a Sprain you'll have a little bit of pain with a torn ligament you'll be in absolute agony!!
