Weight can fluctuate during periods of stress and depression. Certain medications can make one gain weight as well. One psych drug that is famous for this is depakote.
Other factors include too much carbs and not enough proteins. Fad diets do not work either. All diet and no exercise will eventually get you no where.

also, no excercise can really do a number on someone's weight.
