Is the dentist ripping me off?
So, I went to the dentist the other day and I got my regular teeth cleaning. Then they said that I 'need' sealants on 15 of my teeth. (a clear coat the covers your teeth) because my grooves where i bite are too deep and they said its more likely for me to get cavaties if i dont even though i've never had a cavatie in my life? It's 42 dollars per sealant and i need 15. If you do the math, that 630 dollars!? All of my friends think its ridiculous. Should I get them or not?
They aren't ripping you off. They are suggesting a very legitimate procedure. Deep grooves in a tooth are difficult to clean and usually end up being the first place that a cavity forms. Placing sealants, though it won't 100% prevent you from ever getting a cavity, will make the top of the teeth smooth, therefore easier to clean.
If you can be very diligent in your cleaning, and have a very low sugar intake, then you don't have to get the sealants. But if you do get a cavity, remember that the average cost of a one surface filling can be as much as $150.00. Sealants are obviously alot less than that.

AFTER 50 s certainly cavities do come up.If needed or not to be decided.not concentrate on financial matter, get those which are must.

Well in the long run its a good Idea because braces, orthodontics can't help this except for painful procedures or expensive cosmetic surgery down the line its more beneficial to get it done now

no money shouldnt be a concern when it comes to your health and well-being.

yeah. sealants are awesome. its better to just get all ur teeth sealed up rather than fill each tooth's cavity later in life.
SAVE MONEY =]

Yes. As long as u look after your teeth properly they should be ok 4 many years.

basically, you only need sealants applied to your 1st and 2nd molars. So I would seek a second opinion.

get another opinion for sure.

Probably not. Although you must take great care of your teeth because you have never had a cavity. Maybe you should ask if you continue with meticulous oral hygiene are they necessary. However, even with perfect oral hygiene you can't always get the pits and grooves clean with this problem. Sealants are thought to last for many years so it would be a great investment to keep your teeth as perfect as they are.
-----------------------------see below------------------------------
A dental sealant (also called a pit and fissure sealant) is a plastic, professionally-applied material that is put on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities. Sealants provide a physical barrier so that cavity-causing bacteria cannot invade the pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth.
Since the early 1970s, childhood dental caries on smooth tooth surfaces (those without pits and fissures) has declined markedly because of widespread exposure to fluorides. By 1986-1987, approximately 90 percent of the decay in children’s teeth occurred in tooth surfaces with pits and fissures, and almost two-thirds were found on the chewing surfaces alone. Dental sealants have been shown to prevent decay on tooth surfaces with pits and fissures. Sealants have been approved for use for many years and are recommended by professional health associations and public health agencies.
The potential to develop pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But some adults at high risk of decay can benefit from sealants as well. Your dentist can tell you if you would benefit from dental sealants.

Fifteen is a bit much. That would be putting sealants on your molars, including your wisdom teeth, and your bicuspids, which are the two teeth in between your canines (eye teeth) and your molars.
If anything at all, I would put sealants on the first and second molars, like Gail advised.... but if you've gone this long without a cavity, and the grooves are 'too deep', why fix what isn't broken?
Just my opinion.....

Sealants are a good idea. They help prevent cavities. Usually dentists won't do them on adults though. Something to do with the teeth not being the same and grinding your teeth.
If you can get them, do it! You many not need all 15 done. Get just the back molars done where you do the most chewing. That should be enough.
