How can one improve your lung capacity when its at 17%?
My best friend's mom is really sick... according to the doctor she has 17% of her lung capacity left. Is there ANY way of improving this? She walks around with some oxygen...but I really wish there was some operation or just something can be done to make her life a little easier! Any help would be appreciated!
The options depend on the cause. If lung capacity has been lost due to scarring, there is nothing that can be done. If the capacity is reduced due to fluid accumulation or reduced volume during inhalation or exhalation, the problem may be treatable by targeting the cause of these problems with drugs or exercise. Problems with fluid accumulation and low tidal volume often improve with physical activity, and lung exercises that force a person to exhale more completely. She could have the doc send her to a respiratory rehab specialist.

there is lung volume reduction it can only be used for certain COPD conditions I looked into it for myself I'm not a good candidate for the procedure check online I used webmd it is very difficult operation and a long recovery good luck

There must be some reason why the lung capacity is so much compromised. With that capacity one may require oxygen inhalation. Blowing balloon is a good exercise to increase the lung capacity, but consult the doctor first as to know the cause of such a low lung capacity.

I know how your friend's mother feels, my lung capacity is at 31% and I am on oxygen 24/7. Her options for improvement will depend on what her illness is that caused her lung capacity to lower. A good thing for her to look into would be Respiratory rehabilitation. They can help her exercise, help build up her endurance, and teach her breathing techniques that will help strengthen the parts of her lungs that are still functioning. I started resp. rehab with a 24% lung function and now am at 31% and I believe the rehab was a big part of that progress. As for a surgery there is lung transplant but she has to go through an evaluation process to make sure she is a qualified candidate. Again though, it all depends on her illness if these options are available for her. She should discuss them with her doctor. Best thing to do is keep supporting her like you do. Knowing you care so much will help keep a smile on her face and fight each day. Your friend is lucky to have you by them and their mother's side. I wish you all well and good luck.

No. Once lung function has gone, there is no way to bring it back, just inhalers, oxygen and so forth to give a better quality of life. take care

No her lung capacity won't improve but she can slow down the progression. She can exercise, eat healthy, drink water, stay as active as she can, and keep a positive attitude. Her lungs are seriously impaired but she can still do some things. Help her to maintain some quality to her life.
